Oh, if I were a rich woman…

Occasionally, and believe me it’s not often, I allow myself to think about what I would do with a large sum of money, were I to stumble across one. Of course the boring, mundane things like pay off bills come first. I don’t need a new house, I like mine fine. I would probably do some travelling because that would be just too wonderful.

However, one thing I would do, without a doubt is go to my local bookstore and not have to worry about picking out one book or staying within my budget. I would love to be able to load my arms up and read to my heart’s content. Both my son and I have a love of books and we could easily drop quite a chunk of change in a bookstore.

So it’s not the hot sports car that I dream of or the latest fashions but books. *Sigh* But for now, I’ll keep making my reading lists and hope to make some headway through them. Nice to dream from time to time though.

  1. I'd go to the bookstore too - but it wouldn't be first. First would be hiring someone to clean my house on a weekly basis. If it's a lot of money they could do my laundry too!!

  2. Oh that would high on my list too Jemi! I didn't think about that. Obviously cleaning should have come to mind sooner probably. ;)

  3. Books would be high on my list, too. I would love to buy boxes of them and donate them to the local shelter for children in foster care. I plan on donating some of mine when they're published.

  4. Wonderful thought TK! I always go for the school library (one of my son's favorite places). But that's an awesome idea. As a matter of fact, I may donate some older books I have to a battered women's shelter. Thanks for the excellent idea.

  5. Lisa, I would buy a book store. That way I would be surrounded by books of all kinds all the time. I would also donate. Those books that would typically end up back at the company would be bought and given away. In that way, the authors would win and readers who otherwise wouldn't get a new book would win.

Like you and TK, I have been giving a great deal of thought to donating my gently used books. It would be fun to start a group filled with like minded souls.

It could target literacy, aid low income families in having access to the written word and be a good marketing platform to boot.

We could come up with a snazzy name, sticker books with the organizations info, direct them to a blog filled with book reviews, literacy info and, and, and....

I'm a big dreamer, but I think something like this could be a success and would require virtually no outlay of cash. It would also appease my burning desire to equalize the literary landscape and assist struggling readers (since literacy and poverty go hand in hand).

Let me know if you would be interested in seriously discussing something like this.
